Working for HCEMS
Our paramedics and advanced EMTs respond to medical emergencies throughout Henderson County in settings ranging from downtown Hendersonville to backcountry areas of Pisgah National Forest. Henderson County EMS responds to 911 calls, whereas convalescent ambulance transports are provided by a separate agency, the Henderson County Rescue Squad.
HCEMS personnel are based out of six stations positioned throughout the county. The vast majority of our ambulances are staffed with two paramedics with units occasionally staffed by one paramedic and one AEMT.
Full-time staff work 12-hour shifts on a modified DuPont schedule which includes both day and night shifts. Full-time paramedics work 7 day shifts and 7 night shifts each 28 day cycle. This schedule model also has the advantage of including a period of 7 consecutive days off every 4 weeks. This allows our paramedics to enjoy meaningful time off to spend with their families, travel, or enjoy all that beautiful western North Carolina has to offer.
Henderson County paramedics also have the option to work a solely daytime shift schedule. It follows a similar pattern, but includes only day shifts and does not involve working nights.
