Surviving a Flood
Floods can start from rainfall, coastal storms, and overflows of dams or other water systems. These common natural disasters can develop slowly or quickly. They often cause outages, damage property, and create additional threats like landslides. Keep in mind these tips from Ready.gov to prepare before, survive during, and stay safe after a flood:
- Do not walk, swim, or drive through flood waters. Turn Around. Don’t Drown!
- Be sure to listen to authorities for information and instructions. Evacuate when alerted and return home only when authorities say it’s safe.
- Sign up for weather warning systems to learn if your area is susceptible to a flood. Systems like community message alerts and the FEMA mobile app provide emergency updates.
