What is MAT?

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) involves using an FDA-approved medication for opioid addiction. There are several kinds of medications used in MAT, including Buprenorphine, Naltrexone, and Methadone. These medications have been shown to reduce cravings while people get the help they need to recover from addiction. For best results, MAT should be combined with counseling and support services.

“Patients receiving medications as part of their opioid addiction treatment are 75% less likely to die because of their addiction than those not receiving medications.”  Reference: UNC Project Echo

MAT is available in several locations in Western North Carolina, and in some places at reduced cost for people with no health insurance.
