Registered Motor Vehicles
Beginning with September 2013 registration renewals, the NCDMV began sending a new combined notice for vehicle registration and the property tax for the motor vehicle, and both were due at the same time. The full amount of motor vehicle property taxes and NCDMV registration fees must be paid in full, to the NCDMV, before a registration renewal sticker can be issued.
In the interest of simplification, especially in favor of our citizens making one payment versus two separate payments, the Henderson County Board of Commissioners, along with the NC Association of County Commissioners and the Henderson County Tax Offices have long supported this change.
For more information about this change, please contact the Office of the Henderson County Assessor at 828-697-4870.

What If I Am Billed Incorrectly?
The Office of the Henderson County Assessor can only make corrections to the value of the vehicle or the taxing districts. All other inquiries and corrections must be directed to the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles.
All incorrect billings should be contested within 30 days.
What If I Don't Pay On Time?
If the Combined Vehicle Registration Renewal and Property Tax Notice is not paid by the due date, a registration sticker cannot be issued and the NCDMV will begin charging interest at a rate of 5% for the first month and 3/4% for each subsequent month until the notice is paid.
How Do I Appeal?
The valuation or taxable location of your motor vehicle must be appealed to the Office of the County Assessor within 30 days of the due date.
Where Do I Pay?
Your Combined Vehicle Registration Renewal and Property Tax Notice must be paid to the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. Payments can be made by mail, at any License Plate Agency, DMV Office or on DMV's web site. The Henderson County Tax Collector's Office can no longer take payments under the new Tag and Tax Program.
