What is Affordable Housing?
According to the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), a housing unit is generally considered affordable when it does not cost more than 30% of a household's gross income.
Affordable housing can also be a form of subsidized housing; when rents are reduced due to a government program. Public housing, project-based Section 8, Section 8 vouchers, Low-Income Housing Tax Credits, the State Housing Trust Fund, down payment assistance, and reduced mortgage interest rates are also types of subsidized housing programs. Subsidized or affordable housing does not mean a reduction in housing quality, nor does it determine the location and type of housing.
Henderson County currently has two Public Housing Agencies (PHA):
- WNCSource (Section 8)
- Hendersonville Housing Authority (Low-Rent)
