Building and Trade Permits
Do I need a permit to repair storm damage caused by Hurricane Helene?
- Yes, a permit is required for, construction, reconstruction, alteration, repair or replacement of any structure. The addition, repair or replacement of load-bearing structures. The addition or change or design of plumbing system. The addition or replacement of heating and air system. The addition or replacement of any electrical system.
Why are permits important?
- Permits protect owners, residents, communities and buildings by making sure repairs and/or construction meet current building code standards.
Do I need a NC Licensed General Contractor (GC)?
- Yes, any construction cost of $40,000 or more requires a valid NC general contractors license.
Zoning Permits
Do I need a zoning permit to rebuild or repair a structure?
- A zoning permit may be required depending on the zoning jurisdiction. Please contact your Zoning jurisdiction for more information.
Floodplain Permits
My home or business is in the floodplain. Do I need a special permit and/or do I need to wait to pull permits for rehab/rebuild?
- Yes, your plan will be reviewed by your jurisdiction’s Floodplain Administrator. If the property is more than 50% damaged (substantially damaged), any rehab will be treated as a new build and must comply with current floodplain ordinances. Contact your jurisdiction’s Floodplain Administrator:
