Deputy County Attorney

Duties and Responsibilities: This position provides legal representation for the Department of Social Services in all aspects of Social Services Law with the emphasis on Child Welfare Law and Abuse, Neglect and Dependency proceedings, Adult Guardianships and Protective Services and Child Support Establishment and Enforcement; works with Social Workers to prepare cases for trial and represent the agency in District Court and hearings before the Clerk; adheres to deadlines set by statue and follow deadline form the filing of petitions through adjudication, disposition and permanency for children in the custody of the agency; draft briefs for cases appealed to the Court of Appeals. This position also performs difficult professional duties as legal counsel and attorney for Henderson County, and particularly its Department of Social Services; performs related work as required.  Work is performed under general supervision.  Reports to the Assistant County Attorney.

Qualifications: Ability to express conclusions and arguments clearly and logically in oral and written form; ability to handle adversarial trials and to effectively maintain large case loads; ability to research and analyze facts, evidence and legal instruments; exemplary problem-solving skills; ability to apply rules, case law and statutes specific to the provision of county services; excellent writing skills are required for the preparation of petitions, motions, briefs, memoranda, pleadings and other legal documents; ability to apply rules, case law and statutes specific to the provision of Juvenile Law, Adult Services and Child Support; excellent communication and negotiation skills; advanced technical and critical thinking skills; ability to exercise independence and sound judgment in carrying out the duties of the position; ability to multi-task and prioritize; excellent organization and time management skills

Education and Experience: Both graduation from an accredited law school and a current North Carolina law license are required. Experience with motions practice, appellate work and litigation preferred.

Salary Range:   $68,003.91 - $137,678.73

 

Hiring salary will be determined based on qualifications and internal equity.
