Building Inspector (Project)
(These positions are classified as Project to assist with hurricane relief efforts. The length of this assignment will be 6 -12 months.)
Duties and Responsibilities: Inspects building in the process of construction, alteration, or repair for compliance with building code requirements, approved plans, construction, installation, and safety practices; issues inspection certificates for approved installation. This position also Performs intermediate skilled inspection work in the enforcement of state and local building codes governing one or more of the following areas of building trades: electrical, building (construction and energy), mechanical, and plumbing; performs related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision. Reports to the Building Code Supervisor.
Qualifications: Thorough knowledge of building construction, materials, and practices of the building trades; thorough knowledge of state and local ordinances and codes administered through the Inspection Department applicable to the inspector’s area of certification; general knowledge of County geography; ability to detect and locate defective workmanship in construction or repair of buildings; ability to interpret blueprints, diagrams, specifications, codes, and building regulations; ability to physically maneuver on scaffolds, structural members, and in cramped quarters to accomplish thorough inspections; ability to safely and efficiently operate a motor vehicle; ability to attend work regularly; excellent interpersonal skills.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable construction experience in residential and/or commercial electrical, building, mechanical, or plumbing construction work including licensure.
Must possess or be able to attain standard certificates issued by the North Carolina Code Officials Qualification Board (NCCOQB) within 2yrs of employment. Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
